UKSSH AND XL SCAFFOLDING FIND A COOL SOLUTION FOR THE ICE HOUSE

By designing scaffold with a 3-metre lift, UKSSH and XL Scaffolding made the removal and replacement of cladding quick and easy at the Ice House – an iconic building in the centre of Nottingham.

Like so many buildings in the UK, cladding on the exterior of Nottingham’s Ice House was identified as a potential fire risk to inhabitants.

The Ice House is an iconic building in the heart of Nottingham City Centre, which houses both serviced accommodation and rentable apartments. The high footfall in the building placed additional urgency on finding an effective solution that could be delivered quickly and with minimum disruption.

Working with Scaffold Designers RDG Engineering, UKSSH and XL Scaffolding took advantage of the design flexibility of Haki System Scaffold to instal scaffolding with a 3-metre lift to align with the building’s concrete floor levels – a solution that enabled the old dangerous exterior cladding to be quickly removed and easily replaced with fire-proof Permarock panels. The building has been re insulated and boarded and then render applied.

Sam Richardson, Contracts Director at XL Scaffolding commented that using Haki System Scaffold and adopting 3 metre lifts on the project ticked a number of boxes: “Fewer components meant that erection times were reduced by 50% compared to tube and fittings, it also meant that we could schedule fewer deliveries to site – thus keeping disruption to residents to a minimum – and the 3 metre lifts made the removal and installation of panels so much easier for the contractors”.

Logistics of the city centre location meant access restrictions with larger vehicle’s was tough, XL transported materials directly from UKSSH yard in Tamworth directly to the roof location using a 22.5m HIAB mitigating the area needed to store materials.
