SHIELD SCAFFOLDING SERVICES AND UKSSH PASS INITIATIVE TEST AT BRISTOL UNIVERSITY
A hugely impressive temporary roof to protect the student residence at Cathedral Park in Bristol provided a few unexpected tests for Shield Scaffolding Services and UKSSH, which they passed with flying colours.
The temporary roof, designed by Oryx Scaffold Design Ltd, protected the Grade II listed former Roman Catholic Cathedral during the course of a £1.7 million renovation project.
The first challenge was the site constraints which meant that each section of the 32 metre span roof had to be erected in a very confined area prior to being crane lifted into place.
Once the roof was being installed, an “eleventh hour” change to requirements for the roof necessitated the design to be altered and approved and additional components delivered to the site all within a 24 hour period.
The completed roof, which features a number of different span widths, is so impressive that it is featured in the promotional video for the refurbished student accommodation.
Jamie Angell, Shield Scaffolding Services Managing Director, attributes the success of the project to teamwork: “Working with UKSSH not only brings additional product expertise to the project, the fact that they also understand and respond to the logistical requirements means that their deliveries can be relied on to keep projects on track.
“At Cathedral Park the site constraints meant that phased deliveries were essential to the success of the project, and when the temporary roof design was altered midway through the erection process UKSSH responded with revised delivery schedules within hours.
“The fact that UKSSH is the only company to provide an option to hire or buy roof sheets also provides us with the flexibility to respond ultra quickly when plans change at short notice”.
