ROLLING TEMPORARY ROOF TICKS ALL THE BOXES FOR CASS SCAFFOLDING

When CASS Supplies Limited were tasked with providing a temporary roof for the Grade II listed Walworth Town Hall, the list of requirements was comprehensive:

   • The roof had to be watertight to prevent any further damage to the fire-damaged building.

   • The scaffold design had to allow the public to continue using the building unhindered while the renovation work was proceeding.

   • Access to space around the site was very restricted, so it was important to coordinate deliveries and minimise them as much as possible.

   • The contractors required the roof to accommodate crane access to the work being undertaken on the building’s roof, where new beams were being installed.

CASS worked closely with JM Scaffold Design and UK System Scaffold Hire to design a solution to the complicated problem. Together they developed a rolling temporary roof so that materials could be craned in for the renovation work where and when required, while still protecting the building from the elements.

The resulting temporary roof ticked all the boxes, delivering precisely what was required: a watertight solution that was quickly and easily manoeuvred to allow access to the work area; and because the Haki Temporary Roof has fewer components than other systems and is up to five times quicker to install, fewer deliveries meant that disruption to the surrounding area was also minimised.

Tom Gent, Managing Director of CASS, said that this is the latest example of projects where the collaboration between UKSSH and CASS has delivered great results: “My favourite part of this job was the design of the work as this was such a unique project. At Walworth Town Hall we devised a solution where half the scaffold roof was lower so that it could be moved across the building depending on the work being done inside the building”.

The ease and simplicity of operating the rolling temporary roof had one further cost-saving benefit too, as Tom explains: “The mobile roof was so easy to move that it enabled us to train the guys onsite to use the roof rather than provide a team of scaffolders which would have been an expensive additional cost for the client.”
