TEAL SCAFFOLD AND UKSSH PROTECT PRICELESS COLLECTION

Teal Scaffold and UKSSH collaborated to install a temporary roof to protect the priceless collection of internationally famous artworks displayed in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

The Walker Art Gallery has one of the most important and renowned painting collections in the UK including masterpieces by Rubens, Rembrandt, Turner and Stubbs and Impressionist works by Monet and Degas – so when renovation work was scheduled for the roof of the vast 150 year old neo-classical building in Liverpool’s “Cultural Quarter” which houses the collection, it was imperative to ensure that the temporary roof was absolutely watertight.

Teal Scaffold Ltd has a hard-earned reputation in the North West for delivering innovative solutions on a wide range of complex scaffolding projects and realised that UKSSH’s unrivalled experience on temporary roof projects could provide invaluable support on the project.

Key personnel at UKSSH have hands-on experience of building temporary roofs over some of the UK’s (and Europe’s) most historic and iconic buildings and have been instrumental in developing innovations such as the roll-out method and providing both planned and unplanned openings to the work area.

Teal Scaffold and UKSSH worked hand in glove to coordinate the project: A major challenge for the project was the location of the gallery which precluded the use of a crane; UKSSH organised product training for Teal’s scaffold team to demonstrate the roof roll-out method using Haki Heavy Duty Supports. This enabled the roof to be built from a safe working platform, using full collective fall prevention methods, and then rolled into position.

The temporary roof, which measured 16m high and 20m wide, was a highly robust and easy-to-maintain solution which enabled the optimum working conditions for construction work to be undertaken effectively and safely.

At the end of the project the roll-out method also made dismantling the roof much easier while also minimising the risk of inadvertently damaging the new glass roof.

Combining the skills of both Teal Scaffold and UKSSH, the project perfectly demonstrated many advantages of the Haki Temporary Roof, including how fewer components helps it to be up to five times faster to install than traditional structures … and perhaps most importantly, how it provides a very effective weatherproof seal.
