Covering almost 350,000 square feet and featuring over 120 fashion and designer brands, York Designer Outlet is big enough to house three Premier League football pitches and welcomes over 3.5 million visitors every year.
When the statistics are that impressive, replacing two escalators has the potential to cause significant disruption to customer flow.
Tasked with minimising the impact on customer experience at one of McArthur Glen’s flagship outlet villages, IBN Scaffold Access Ltd knew that, working with UK System Scaffold Hire and Creator Scaffold Designs, they could develop a solution which would not only provide the temporary Public Access Staircases that were required but also deliver a design that would be aesthetically pleasing.
It was essential to minimise the footprint of each staircase whilst also complying with regulations: The design achieved a narrow footprint just 2.8 metres wide and 5 metres long.
Two temporary Public Access Staircases were erected to create a one-way system. Each staircase was fully compliant with colour-coded non-slip nose-grips and DDA handrails.
UKSSH created rounded corners for the staircase cladding to eliminate sharp edges and also supplied all new cladding which carried the client’s own signage.
While safety and compliance were primary requirements, the staircases looked good, too: With fewer components compared to other systems, the scaffold design had minimal visual impact on the stylish malls and the branded anti-climb cladding further helped the temporary staircases to blend in with their surroundings.
