LOCAL SCAFFOLD SERVICES LTD AND UKSSH PROVIDE EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO FIRE DAMAGE AT HISTORIC PUB

Once the Fire Brigade has extinguished a major roof fire and the loss adjusters have visited the site, the next priority is often to quickly install a temporary roof to protect against further damage.

The Stags Head in Wellesbourne dates back to 1640, a Grade II listed building that - in the 1870’s - played a significant part in the fledgling Trade Union Movement and which, until a devastating fire ripped through it, had a traditional thatched roof.

As with the vast majority of cases of fire damage, the challenge of designing and erecting a suitable temporary roof is magnified by the need to complete the project in double-quick time to prevent additional weather damage to the remaining building.

With both the need for speed and confidence that the temporary roof would provide maximum protection against the elements, Sheffield based Local Scaffold Services Ltd had confidence that UKSSH wouldn’t let them down.

Together, Local Scaffold Services Ltd, UKSSH and Creator Scaffold Designs provided a solution that ticked all the boxes: Utilising available equipment to speed the process, a roof structure was designed using a traditional pitch supported by vertical beams to compensate for different heights required on each side of the building to accommodate three tall, historic, chimney stacks.

Demonstrating some of the inherent benefits of the Haki Temporary Roof, including the facts that has fewer components than other systems, is up to five times faster to install than traditional structures and is lightweight and easy to handle, the temporary roof was constructed on the ground and craned into place in just one day.

Gary Griffiths, MD of UKSSH commented: “It’s a fact of life that buildings were never designed with the thought that – one day – someone would have to design and install a temporary roof to protect it!

That truth applies to modern buildings, let alone historic buildings with rooflines that have evolved over the centuries: That means that in many cases the temporary roof design and erection requires as much ingenuity as was shown by the master builders who were responsible for the building it covers.”
