Birmingham Airport’s £300m capital investment programme, designed to increase its capacity from 11.5 million customers a year to 18 million customers a year by 2033, requires a major reconfiguration of the existing facilities while the airport is still running: Haki public access staircases are playing a pivotal role in keeping passengers moving.
It has been said that keeping Birmingham Airport running while the major construction project (including the construction of a new security hall) takes place is rather like a sports stadium continuing to stage fixtures while relaying the pitch … and the temporary public staircases supplied by UKSSH and erected by Lyndon SGB as part of their wider involvement in the project are vital to its success – enabling changes to walking routes through the airport to take place throughout the project as construction progresses.
Two public access staircases were built in tandem to enable a one-way system to be achieved, each 6.5 metre staircase featured double DDA handrails and GRP steps and landings.
Given the projected footfall and the estimated 12 months that the stairs would be in use, Haki public access staircases were the obvious choice – manufactured to the highest standards, delivering safe working loads up to 7.5 kN/m2 and fully compliant with the strictest safety standards.
